Laszlo Slomovits is one of the twin brothers in Ann Arbor’s children’s music duo, Gemini. In addition to his music for children, he has set to music and recorded five CDs of the poetry of the ancient Sufi mystics, Rumi and Hafiz — http://poetryintosong.com.

Jennifer Burd has had poetry published in numerous journals, and her first full-length book of poems, Body and Echo, was published by PlainView Press in 2010. Laszlo and Jennifer have given a number of joint readings that feature both their solo work — Laszlo singing Rumi and Hafiz poems, Jennifer reading her poems accompanied by guitar improvisations — as well as poems they’ve written together, some of which Laszlo has set to music.

Open mic is first, followed by the featured readers. New Millennium is every third Monday of the month.

Event: New Millennium Poetry at Sweetwaters

Place: Sweetwaters Downtown, corner of W. Washington St. & Ashley

Date: Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Time: 7-8:30 pm

May brings us fresh flowers, fresh wind & weather, and two fresh new voices from the west side of the state– Jordan Rickard and Paloma Clohossey are our features this month. They have been studying with Diane Seuss, our fabulous feature from back in December, in Kalamazoo College’s Creative Writing Program and will be graduating in June. They share a talent for musical language, striking images, and their work, in radically different ways, explores the relationship between people and places, at home and abroad. Jordan was raised in Wichita, KS and his most recent series of poems tries to capture the effect of the American cowboy on modern society. Paloma lived in Kenya and brings us poems about her experience of African life.

Open mic is first come first serve, so come a little early to guarantee a spot. We look forward to seeing you on the 17th!

Jonathan B. Wright is a true Ann Arborite. Wright is probably best known for being a fairyologist and his study of the urban-fairy fairy doors. Before that (and still), Jonathan has worked as an illustrator and designer of products for children.

Jonathan received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan. He went on to design window displays at Middle Earth in Ann Arbor. Wright worked for 11 years at Colorbök designing and illustrating products and eventually started a new company, Giddy Up, where he continued that career.

Whenever he can, he will sketch to record ideas and events. Wright claims to have a poor memory, and the working part is a visual memory.

Jonathan says, “I do not consider myself an ‘Artist’. I tend to label myself an “illustrator”. More broadly I am a “maker”. Considering my surname, that seems appropriate. A Wheelwright makes wheels, a cartwright makes carts, a shipwright builds ships, a playwright creates plays…and so on. Originally Wright was more specific to woodwork. I make stuff.”

Jonathan B. Wright’s works will be on display during the month of May. Don’t miss his wonderfully detailed and often witty drawings.

Date: May 2 – May 31, 2011.
Place: Sweetwaters Downtown (123 W. Washington St., Ann Arbor)

Jonathan’s post cards, greeting cards, and posters are also available for purchase at Sweetwaters Downtown.
